Evaluation question three

What have you learned from your audience feedback ?

Music Video feedback

Questionnaires

We decided to do a questionnaire and give it to adults and people in our own age group. After doing this we found that everyone but 3 chose indie rock as their favourite genre and everyone in the age group 31+ chose indie rock. Some of the things that they liked to see in a music video was;

  • They like the genre Indie rock because of the lyrics and melody.

  • All together they like videos to have a narrative and also performance based.

  • All except for 1 preferred the music to be upbeat.

  • We found that people are bored of seeing fighting, half naked women and boy bands who talk about love.

  • Not one person had the same favourite music video but everyone liked a video that was more upbeat and bright with a storyline but performance based.
Doing this research helped us to get an overall idea of the audiences likes and dislikes, we found that we followed the audiences feedback in order to give the audience a video that they would enjoy watching . This information helped us to form a fun, upbeat video that the audience would like . I feel that feedback was a very important process of making a music video because after all you want to please the audience because they are the ones that will be watching the video .
After handing out a questionnaire we though of some basic ideas that we wanted to use in our music video and we did a pitch to the whole of our media class so that we could get some professional opinions:

Pitch feedback

The feedback that we got as a whole was very good but we also had some bad points in order to improve it.
Improvements;
  •  Make sure that the video is nothing like the original because of how well known the song is .
  •  Our teacher told us the same thing but to also add in a basic concept such as show the difference in family life through out the years because this will still show a busy house and will still be a good conceptual idea this would be good because the song is based on family life .
  • Jess Bell who is a student in my class also stated to us that we should make sure that we do not follow the lyrics.
Positive:
  • They liked our song choice because it was upbeat .
  • They liked the idea of using a big house as our main setting.
  • They liked how unique the idea was .
Over all every one said that they particularly liked how original the idea was and they liked the locations and ideas that we showed them . It may be a hard video to pull of but if we do pull it of it will look really good. The feedback helped us a lot as we then decided not to follow the lyrics and to add in a main concept . The main concept that we then thought of was to have lots of different themes going on in each room .

Secondary research

I first of all found what videos were popular by looking on sysomos and found that music videos were popular but that videos with entertainment was also popular, this tells me and my group that having comedy in our music video will make it a very popular video and that it will get views . With Music having an over all view count of 99,160 and 396.5 favourites we know that music videos are popular and with the entertainment having a view count of 224,827 and 986,5 as favourites we know that if we make a music video with these things in that it will sell and get a few hits .

I looked at Linkin park as an indie rock band to see if the new generation indie rock videos are popular and as you can see from the results bellow they are, with 2,723,531 views and 33 million likes on twitter it shows that it is popular for the old and young generation. By comparing Madness and Linkin park I can see that the indie rock genre from the 80's and from the 2000's are both popular but the 2000's are more popular which is why we would like to modernize our music video a little bit to appeal to a wider audience .

In order to see if we should use this song we looked at the views that people have on the song so I went on Vid stats to find out how many views and subscribers there was on the artist madness. Upon looking at the stats we found that people liked madness songs as they have over 5000 views and over 70 subscribers . This shows us that this genre is popular and would be good to do a video on .

Upon looking at Madness music videos and others that are in that genre, it is clear there is an audience for them. the song that we are doing has over 4 million view on YouTube showing that it is a popular song and people listen and watch it .
Similarly The Specials- Ghost Town has over 2 million views . This shows us that the genre of music that we have chosen is popular and has a lot of views which means that it was a good genre to pick .

After looking at the results from this research we found that it helped us a lot to figure out what conventions to follow in our music video . The song that we picked may get a lot of hits or no hits because of how popular the genre is . We also came to a decision to make it a fun upbeat video because of how many hit the fun and upbeat videos got from Madness . We feel that by following the conventions from normal Madness music videos it will create a good , fun video that will draw in the audiences attention .

Target Audience Focus group

We found that they like our genre but they hated seeing naked people. They also said that they like the music to be upbeat and the music video to show people partying and having a good time because it makes you feel better and want to start dancing. In a Madness video they like to see old school partying, humour - people being silly. We know this because of one of their replies "I think that the genre and band are about having fun and having a great humour". They want the music video to narrative based rather than just performance based. Billie said that "disjuncture works well when it is done properly"and that "having a story line allows you to relate to the lyrics". We pitched our idea of having different themes in different rooms, Billie said: "if different themes are done properly then it would look quite good but if not then it would be messy". Vanessa and Sally both chose one theme. They liked the idea of having different eras in different rooms and if we could pull off the themes of Alice in Wonderland etc. then it will look really good.

We really appreciated the feedback that we got of Sally, Vanessa and Billie as they are all from different age groups but found that they both had similar opinions.  This helped us to figure out what our final idea would be because we knew that we could aim it towards the younger and older audience because it turns out that they all thought the same. The feedback taught us to go with our instinct and to try pull of the best that we could. The themes went down well with the audience and Billie’s feedback taught us to plan out each theme really carefully in order to get it right.  We also found that by using people from a different ethnicity we were able to see that the ethnic group did not change opinions. They all think that the video is going to be a fun video to watch with lots of areas that will attract the audience and with all three of our interviewers having the same opinion we know that ethnicity, gender and social class does not matter.

Target Audience Interviews

We did an interview with two different people, one older person in her 30's and another who was 16 and in her teens. This is because we wanted to aim it towards a wide spread audience with a mixture of old and young people . In this video we found that both of the people we interviewed both said that they like Ska/indie rock music and they both hated seeing skantily clad women in the music videos . We found that both of them like a video to be upbeat and have a story line with a performance based video but they both hated just a performance base video because they find it boring to watch so we are not going to have a solely performance base video.
This research helped us a lot as we were stuck on whether to have a narrative based video or a performance based video, after interviewing two people from our target audience we soon realized that it would be best to include both .

Interview on class

After looking at the information we collected, as a group we spoke about our ideas and how they would attract our target audience. Our original idea didn't really have a narrative, it was just a lot of people having a good time. But after getting this bit of information we came up with a new conceptual idea where we show different eras in different rooms rather than just people doing different things. We then went further to say that in the separate rooms we could show different year and characters rather than just friends messing around. This information made us decide to use different famous movies and themes that every one will know such as Greece and Alice in wonderland , things such as changes in the position of women and technology. I think that this made our music video what it is. This bit of research in particular made us think of different themes to go a long with so that the video wasn't all over the place .

We it then interviewer people from both lower class and middle class who are into ska music and love madness songs and also like the ideas for our music video, we interviewed them on the BBC class calculator so that we could see exactly what class they are in so that we know what class to aim our music video towards. After doing the class calculator we realized that we should be aiming our music video towards the lower and middle classes because they had some good percentages and have a wide audience . First of all interviewed Julie Hordon who likes Madness songs and likes our music video idea and her social class came up as established middle class . And we then interviewed Sally Baily and her class came up as traditional working class . We also interviewed Mel Nicholson and she traditional middle class .  We found that these had high percentages and would be aimed towards a more global audience which is what we wanted .By aiming it at a global audience we would get more hits.

Social network feedback

We put our videos onto Facebook and YouTube in order to get some feedback . We asked to give both positive and negative feedback so that we knew what we had done right and what we would need to improve for the future . I was very delighted with the feedback that we got as we got some negative and some positive .

Facebook-

We got some really good positive feedback which in particular they said that they loved the editing, actors and that they were glued to watching the whole video . This is really good for us as we wanted to make the video so that the audiences attention would be glued to the screen through out the whole video . I feel that all the hard work has paid of after seeing these comments. We also got some negative feedback which will help us massively in the future, we got told that the Emo scene was a little to dark to see the characters clearly and that there was to much going on . I feel that this feedback was fair and will improve our future work as we will next time ask around before the video is finished to make sure that all the colours are okay .

YouTube-
After putting our video on YouTube we found that we got four likes and 161 views . This is good for us because it means that people enjoyed watching it which is exactly what we was trying to aim for .

Emails-
Here is an email of one of the teachers that we sent an email to . And the feed back was really good;Gemma G, Jess H, Lillie C – fun and happy, reflected song well, nice matching of rhythms of cuts to music, like the growing absurdity. We wanted this affect on our audience so it was good to get the feedback that we wanted .

Student feedback for our music video during the editing process

We had the whole class evaluate what we had of our music video . We did this so that we could get other peoples feedback on the editing and the story line so that we could improve what we have already . This helps a lot because you may not see the mistakes that you have made where as overs who have watched it for the first time will be able to notice the mistakes. Overall everyone seemed to like the first draft of the music video, in particular the story line behind it because it is unique .

Positive
  • Our class said that they liked the initial concept of the video because it is unique and fun which will keep the audience interested and also fits well with the genre of music we are doing .
  • They were impressed with the fact that we had synced the lip syncing nicely.
  • The Fast pace editing where Lewis turns form one character to another because it flow smoothly .
  • They found the video funny which is what we wanted out of the video, this way we can keep the audience interested and laughing which will create more of a global audience .
  • Casting right - well acted
  • Clear narrative which syncs with the music
Negative
  • One of the big things that we need to change is to hit the impact points better this way it will make the video stand out better
  • Need more clarity on the rabbit hole bit.
  • In bathroom  scene he has jacket on going in but then doesn't have it on when out, isn't clear he is in shorts
  • Impact points at the start need to be edited a bit more to grab attention of the audience straight away, a lot better towards the end of the video.
  • Need to white balance some of the clips to make them have better quality  .

This feedback session helped us more than any other piece of feedback as we had real media student giving their opinion on our product which helped hugely as they could see some stuff that the audience wouldn't of seen . For example hitting the impact points and clarity of the rabbit hole. I feel that the feedback we got was fair and helped us to improve our video to the best that it could be .

We also got some feedback from the younger years :

Positive
  • A few people said that they really liked the story line
  • It kept the audiences attention
  • They liked some of the angles that we had used .
  • The camera is still .
Negative
  • They didn't like the flash at the end .
  • Some people think that there should have been more scenes

Digipak feedback

I feel that the feedback that we got was very good and helped us to bring our idea together. The feedback helps us to create a digipak that looked as closely to a real Ska product as possible . We decided to use checked themes and a group picture as the feedback that we got back suggested that we should do so . We felt that this was useful feedback and decided to use the feedback that we got . This made our digipak look like a real Ska product and helped us to get the full design that we wanted .

Magazine Advert Feedback

When showing the whole class our ideas for our magazine advert they gave us some really good feedback . We knew that by asking the class what they liked about the advert and what they didn't like that we would get some good feedback in order to make a great advert that matches the conventions of the genre .
The class did not like our first idea very much as they did not like the how the boarder was placed at the top and they did not like the picture that we used . They liked that we kept with the themes that were on the digipak but they did not like how it was set out .
They liked the first design and the second design equally, they liked how the boarder looked and they liked how simplistic the design is . They also liked the picture that we used as it kept with the brand identity . They both liked the designs equally so it was up to us to decide how we wanted to set it out .
Similarly they liked the look of the third design as it was very similar to the second design . Some people said they liked the thickness of the second design boarder more and some said they liked the third more . Because they were both so equally voted for we decided to pick qualities that we liked as a group to put on the magazine advert .

The Feedback that we got for our magazine advert helped us a lot as we could then get our magazine advert to look as closely to a real Ska product as possible and our feedback helped us to do this . I feel that the feedback that we got was fair and helped our product to look the very best that we could . Their ideas helped us to pick what design to use and what to do with the design that helped us a lot .

Conclusion
In conclusion i feel that all the feedback we got helped us in different ways. The most useful feedback that we got was during the editing process as our class had watched what we had got so far and could help us improve it to the best piece of work that we could . The feedback in general helped us to know what to do to make a global audience and to fit the audience demographics that we wanted .

  1. Make it clear at what stage you did each and why - not clear at the start]

    include the pitch vid

have the facebook/final feedback come after the group/class feedback sessions

try and add a bit more narrative to the answer, going from start to finish, explaining why each piece of feedback was requested and whether or not it was helpful

Otherwise good, well written and it's almost all there. Just needs a little re-working in places
