Final product for magazine advert

This is our finished magazine advert, we chose to use the same picture that we used on the digipak and we also used the same font that is on the front of our digipak because we would like to keep the same themes to make the brand identity more obvious .

We originally just had the NME rating but the bottom of the magazine advert looked to plain so we put in another rating from MOJO magazine.

Overall the advert was easy to make as we already had the image from the digipak so didn't need to edit the image again and because it was simplistic it did not take any editing .

Magazine advert update

First of all we started by putting the boarder around our product so that we could keep with the themes of Sca music .We did this by using a black back ground and then we put white squares layered over the top to give the checked look .

All we had to do next was copy and paste the picture from of our digipak and put it in the position that we wanted on the magazine advert . This created our main but simple image for the front of the magazine .

Secondly we added the writing that we wanted on the front , this consists of the band name and the album name that we are trying to sell . We used the same font that was on the digipak cover because we wanted to stick with the brand identity and we think that it suits the magazine advert .

Thirdly we added the additional information that is needed making sure that we use the right rankings and names for our genre . We made sure that we put the websites on so that the audiences can find the information that they would like . We added the two tone logo and then made the release date bigger than the rest and used a different font so that it would stand out to the audience.

Magazine advert feedback

When showing the whole class our ideas for our magazine advert they gave us some really good feedback . We knew that by asking the class what they liked about the advert and what they didn't like that we would get some good feedback in order to make a great advert that matches the conventions of the genre .

The class did not like our first idea very much as they did not like the how the boarder was placed at the top and they did not like the picture that we used . They liked that we kept with the themes that were on the digipak but they did not like how it was set out .

They liked the first design and the second design equally, they liked how the boarder looked and they liked how simplistic the design is . They also liked the picture that we used as it kept with the brand identity . They both liked the designs equally so it was up to us to decide how we wanted to set it out .
Similarly they liked the look of the third design as it was very similar to the second design . Some people said they liked the thickness of the second design boarder more and some said they liked the third more . Because they were both so equally voted for we decided to pick qualities that we liked as a group to put on the magazine advert .

Magazine adverts ideas

All of the magazine adverts were very similar as we all had the same ideas already . We all decided that we wanted to keep with the brand identity so that every one would recognise our product . We did this by keeping with the checked theme and the pictures of  the artist .

The first design was a very rough idea in which there is the picture of Lewis that is on the back of our digipak . There is a checked boarder at the top and the release date with a rating. The title Madness and the album Our House was a vital convention to put on the magazine so that the audience knew what album we are promoting .

The second and the third design are very similar only we had our writing in different places . They both have the album picture on the front which keeps with the brand identity well and they both have the checked themes all around the magazine advert. Both adverts have kept the themes plain and simple to keep to the generic stereotypes of the magazine .

Brand Identity

Brand Identity

Brand identity is a name, term, symbol, design or feature that identifies a product differently to other products . The design may use a picture to let the audience know that it is their product and they will put this picture on every single one of their products so that the audience know who it is produced by .

Brand owners manage their brands carefully to create shareholder value, and brand valuation is an important technique that puts a money value to a brand, and allows people to make more money.(e.g. Brands such as Ralph Lauren get lots of money for their products because of its picture of some one playing Polo on a horse) And this creates more money for the brand owners.

You can see from these photos some of the products from Ralph Lauren, the Horse Polo is on each product no matter what the product is e.g as you can see it is on Glasses, perfume and clothing . When ever we see the Horse Polo on anything we automatically know that it belongs to Ralph Lauren . Because of the identity of the brand, this is because it is familiarized as an
expensive and popular brand .

The Brief

To create a magazine advertisement for the digipak.

Final product- Digipak

Our final product turned out very well, we feel that it suits the genre very well and that it will catch the audiences attention . It has all the conventions that a digipak needs and makes a good album .

Second digipak update

Madness our house
This is the finished product of all the characters cut out and placed where we would like them to go . As you can see the basic idea behind this was to make Lewis stand out . We made Lewis stand out even more by adding a black and white affect to every character but Lewis . One of the reasons that we chose to do this was because Lauren who was our umpper lumper was way to bright compared to the rest of the characters . We decided to add a white back ground to the whole digipak to make it rather simplistic and to promote the artist. This is also a good convention of the genre and we would like to stick to the conventions that are presented in ska music so that the audience will recognise straight away what genre Madness is .

We have chose to stick with my first draft idea of the bold font and the simplistic designs. This also sticks to the conventions of the genre and makes it stand out on the white back ground . We also chose to use black font because it also stands out on the white back ground .

We have started to make the back of the digipak and have decided to use some of madness old songs to make the album look realistic . We have chose to use a different font on the back because we do not want it to stand out as much as it does on the front . We have chosen to use ten different song on the back, this is also to make it look realistic .

First Digipak update

We have over all decided to use the feedback that we got from the rest of our class . We are using a photo that we took whilst filming. This photo consists of all the characters that were in our music video from each scene . We have started cutting each character out of this photo as we would like each character hid behind Lewis as we want to promote the artist . We did this through using a wand tool which took most of the shape of the characters. The left over picture that was around the characters that we did not want, we used a rubber and zoomed in to get it as perfectly shaped as we could . It took a while to do this to every single one of the characters that we wanted on the front cover . We then used separate layers for each characters so that we can re-size them and rotate them . We did this so that we can hide each character behind one another .

This is the picture that we used to create the over all picture on the front cover that we wanted . As you can see there is one character per scene that we used in the music video . We wanted to use these themes because it fits in with the hit song "Our House " which the audience will recognize .

You can also see Gemma using the wand tool in order to cut Chrissie out so that we can place her where we would like to put her . You can also see the surrounded area that is around Chrissie which we used the rubber to carefully rub out .

Digipak research-Madness Album covers

I decided to research some of Madness's album covers to give me and idea of what their digipaks looks like . After doing so you can see from the pictures that much like the genre, they all use pictures of the whole band messing around and having fun . This is stereotypical of this genre as all of their videos are of the band messing around and having fun . The genre is rebellious and this shows in their album covers and digipaks . There postures are all slouched with bent knees which connotes rebellion because they are not standing as normal people would . There facial expressions are mostly of them pulling faces which also connotes rebellion as it is not the social norm to pull faces at an audience .

    Feedbak from our music videos.

We decided to post our music videos on Facebook, Youtube and emails to get some feedback on our finished product . We did this so that we know what we could do better next time and to see what people thought of the video . We had some really good feedback and people really enjoyed it .

    Here is an email of one of the teachers that we sent an email to . And the feed back was really good;
Gemma G, Jess H, Lillie C – fun and happy, reflected song well, nice matching of rhythms of cuts to music, like the growing absurdity
We wanted this affect on our audience so it was good to get the feedback that we wanted .

    Editing update

In our final feedback session that we had with our class we were told that people did not understand that Lewis was jumping into a rabbit whole and then walking straight out of the wardrobe so we decided to use a piece of footage that we had of the camera spinning round a light cover . When doing this we had to use smudge effects and a colour change so that we can make it look like a swirl instead of a light . We found that by putting this infront and behind of each scene it linked the scenes together and made it look like he had jumped down a hole and came out of the wardrobe . We feel that this is unique and different as we used lots of different effects such as smudge , blur and dis formation.  Here is what the finished product looked like .

    Final feedback session

We did one final feedback session to get our music video looking perfect, it is clear from the feedback that we are a lot closer to finishing the product and that there is very little to do to it now .
    Good points:
    • Good idea because it is unique
    • Funny and interesting which keeps the audience drawn in
    • Casting right - well acted
    • Clear narrative which syncs with the music

    Bad points:
    • Need more clarity on the rabbit hole bit.
    • In bathroom  scene he has jacket on going in but then doesn't have it on when out, isn't clear he is in shorts
    • Impact points at the start need to be edited a bit more to grab attention of the audience straight away, a lot better towards end
    • Need to white balance some of the clips .

    Editing update three

We decided that before the holidays we wanted to get most of the music video finished so that we could work on improving it when we get back . We have now finished the Alice In Wonder Land scene and the Charlie and the chocolate factory scene which we think looks brilliant .In these scenes we have used cross cutting, Slow Motion and fast pace editing . We used all of these to create the fun but nervous atmosphere that we wanted in these scenes . In particular the slow motion shows the look of fright on Lewis's face whilst he is running away from the other characters . The cross cutting then helps to show Lewis  going from one scene to another .
We tried playing around with the effects on Sony Vegas so that we could make the entrance into the Charlie and the chocolate factory scene look weird and confusing . We played around with swirls , bubble and many more effects to see if we could make this atmosphere look unique and weird. With the Charlie and the chocolate factory scene being short we decided to make the scene have more fast pace editing in order to hit some more impact points (In this scene the impact points are that Lewis is now extremely confused and scared as he has just gone through a rabbit hole into a totally different room ) .

    Monday, 21 October 2013

    Editing update two

From looking at previous music videos we decided that we would like our music video to have a lot of fast pace editing because we think that it looks better . We have also decided to use slow motion editing because we feel that it fits the timing and impact point of the music and we also realized from previous videos that by adding edits such as slow motion it gets you a higher grade .
We have now finished the Emo scene which i feel looks really well because it is fast pace editing with some unsteady footage which signifies how scared and confused our main character Lewis is .  We have also used a lot of shot reverse shots and point of view shots in this scene to show Lewis's point of view and to show each characters emotion . We still need to do the filtering in this scene but have decided to wait for the whole video to be finished before doing this because then we can get the colours perfectly i contrasting nicely with each scene . We have changed the contrast in this scene so that it does not look so pixely and we have used a fade as he walks in the door to make it look more smooth

Student Feedback- First draft of music video

In our lesson today we had the whole class evaluate what we had of our music video so far. We did this so that we could get other peoples feedback on the editing and the story line so that we could improve what we have already . This helps a lot because you may not see the mistakes that you have made where as overs who have watched it for the first time will be able to notice the mistakes. Overall everyone seemed to like the first draft of the music video, in particular the story line behind it because it is unique .

    Positive feedback

    • People said that they liked the initial concept of the video because it is unique and fun which will keep the audience interested and also fits well with the genre of music we are doing .
    • They were impressed with the fact that we had synced the lip syncing nicely.
    • The Fast pace editing where Lewis turns form one character to another because it flow smoothly .
    • They found the video funny which is what we wanted out of the video, this way we can keep the audience interested and laughing which will create more of a global audience .
Negative feedback to improve the video

    • One of the big things that we need to change is to hit the impact points better this way it will make the video stand out better
    • We also need to start filtering the video so that the quality looks better .
    • We need to get the beginning finished because with out the beginning the video doesn't fully make sense .

    Sunday, 13 October 2013

    Editing updates

We can not do the beginning of our music video yet as we do not have the footage for it but so far we have done the bathroom scene which has gone really well . We have used match on action and fast pace editing to make the scene look more panicked and fun . All of our scenes will have Lewis in them so we have made sure that each shot matches his costume and look so that the continuity will be perfect  . We do not want to start filtering our video until it is all finished so that we can get all of the colours to match .The scene looks like we had planned it in our story board and the editing went really well .

As you can see from the picture we used to match on action to make Lewis look more sneaky and to make the impact points fit better .

    Filming Day Four ..

On day four we decided to try and get the rest of the music video finished with meant that we had to have good organisation skills , all the props ready and all of the cast at my house by 11 in the morning . It was very difficult to get all the cast to my house which meant that we had to change some of the actors last minute. This also meant that we had to change the way that we were going to do some of the scenes . It was also hard to get every one into costume as we had to use a lot of make up and different clothing because every one was dressed differently in each scene . In particular the Alice in wonderland scene was hard to get the characters dressed up for as we had very little face paint and had to dress all three actors up to look like the rabbits and the Mad Hatter .  We managed to do the Alice in Wonderland scene, Emo scene, Charlie and Chocolate Factory Scene, Grease scene and we changed the masquerade ball to an Arabic scene where some Arabic women are  praying. We did this to make the video more random and because we did not have the right people to do the masquerade ball scene .

The scene that i feel went the best was the Alice in wonderland scene and The Emo scene , i feel that these went well because we got to spend more time on them and the lighting and acting went really well . In the Emo scene the characters really did suit the scene because of their make up and their hair . The props that we had were really good as we spent ages trying to get the props right so that it would realistic . For example we had lots of sweets for the Charlie and the chocolate factory scene and we had burgers and chips for the cafe scene in the Grease scene .

As you can see here we dressed the kitchen up in checkered cloths so that it would look like an old cafe , you cant see clearly in this photo but there are burgers and chips on the table to also help make the scene look like a cafe scene .

Here is a picture of us doing the make up for the emo scene , we had to do make up for almost every scene so that people would look like the characters that we wanted to have in the music video .

We also had to completely transform some of the rooms so that they did not look like bedrooms any more . This involved us taking all of the furniture out and decorating it to make it fit the scene .

In conclusion i feel that the filming went really well as the scenes looked really good and the acting was really good . I do feel that we could of got some more shots but as we ran out of time this was not possible . I think that the characters looked the part and that we got a lot of great shots that will fit the concept in our film and gives us a variety of shots to work with .

    Filming day three

For day three we filmed the bath room scene in which represents the modern day parties in particular half naked women . We decided to use this in our music video to represent the male gaze theory and also to represent the stereotypes for 2013 . I feel that the filming went really well as all the characters were in costume and we got a variety of great shots but i think that we may need to film it again because we did not get enough shots . If we film again it will give us more footage to mess around with so that we can get the best shots that we need . When doing the music video we soon realized that the bathroom got steamy so got the lens of the camera steamy which messed with the image so we will also have to re- do the footage to get some better shots but this time we will make sure that the water is cold enough so it doesn't steam up .

    Filming day two...

We had to change the location of the band scene due to transport and getting every one there so we have chosen to film the band scene in an old house which will fit in with the music video. We chose to use this setting because we want it to look messy and unique, this is because it will make the video its self look older and it will also suit what we would like it to look like. The filming went great because we managed to film in lots of different angles  and lots of different shots because we had two cameras . We also managed to film the band playing on the roof of the building and used flashing lights and a smoke machine to fit the scene. I feel that the acting was brilliant because Lewis mimed the song perfectly and we also had some one who could play the guitar and some one who could play the drums so that it looked realistic .

    Pro's and Con's for filming

    Pro's

We have currently only done one day of filming but in this day we found that it was really good to film with out any one knowing because this meant that every one was natural and relaxed. This made the acting look really good and the filming look nice and smooth .

    Con's

The main problem that we have had is getting our whole cast together, because of it being the holidays and because we had such a big cast every one seemed to be busy and we couldn't get every one together . Because of this we could only get a couple of shots done other the holidays which we were really disappointing with because use we planned to get it all done over the holidays .

    Filming- Day One

On the first day of filming we decided to do it at a big party that i was holding my self this was mainly because of all the odd themes that were happening in our music video . The parties theme was Arabian nights which we thought could look good in the video especially because it was also based in a weird location which was in a barn . We thought it would be a good opportunity to film here because it means that people were their self's and that people did not have to act which means that the acting will of been better because it was natural . But because of this we sometimes struggled to get the shots this we some times struggled to get the shots that we needed because people kept seeing the camera and pulling faces into it which could work well if we decide to add something quirky in but alternatively it did ruin the shots that we wanted . We mainly filmed this footage as a back up, just in case we needed to fill in any gaps in the music video .

The pictures above show the themes that were filmed with in the clips and the location as you can see in the picture where people are stood in front of the barn doors and also the costumes match a good theme which is the Arabian nights theme . All of these add a good effect to the video and the random themes.

    Shot List

A shot list is a list full of all the camera shots that we would like to use in our music video and it also explains when we want them to be done . We like to use a shot list so that we are organized when it comes to do the filming. This way all the shots will be wrote down so that we know what to do when it comes to do the filming . When we are filming we will be bringing a copy of the shot list with us so that we ca get everything perfect . We may add shots that are not on the shot list when it comes to filming because of the angles that we may need to get but we will try to follow the shot list as much as we can in order to get the video perfect .

    Tuesday, 23 July 2013

    Shooting Schedule

We are using the shooting schedule so that we can keep  track of what days we will be filming on and where we will be filming it . We are updating the filming schedule as we go along because we have such a big cast that we have to ask all of them when they are available . This means that it is incredibly hard to get an exact day until the last minute . The shooting schedule is a good thing to use so that you can look back and see what you have filmed already and what needs filming . It helps to keep us a little bit more organized and it helps to get everything done on time .

    Audition for main character

We chose to auditioned Lewis Hodson because we would like him to star as our main character and singer within our music video. This is because we feel it shows some resemblance to the main singer in Madness and he also is an Drama A level student which means that he is a confidence actor and will be able to act well in front of the camera. We gave Lewis a section of the lyrics and got him to learn them and put him in front of the camera to see how he reacts because we need some one who will be confident in front of the camera. We also got him to mime the song to see how good he is at miming because miming is a big part of our music video. We gave him this section five minutes before to see how he copes under pressure as we shall be asking him to do a lot of things that may just come up on the spot and he has no chance to prep it.We also need him to be able to do stuff that will send him out of his comfort own which is why we got him to do a little bit of the dancing .  Lewis is a very confident actor and we have given him the part of are main actor due to his confidence and dedication and the way he can improvise in front of the camera. We also chose him because of his ability to mime is one of the main key things in why we have given him the part due the miming is the key thing within a music video if they cannot mime then there is no point having them  .
